What are the qualities needed to manage a class effectively, Here is an activity adapted from a book on classroom management. It will help you to identify the qualities you think are most important and to decide what changes you may need to make so that your behavior reflects these qualities.

Think back to your teachers in school or to recent tutors who taught you on a course. Remember one teacher you liked and one you disliked. What did you like about the first one? What did you dislike about the second?

Here is an example based on my own school days

Mrs Evans was strict but kind, She had a nice sense of humor and was patient when I did not understand I remember. Miss Bevan, the art teacher with less affection She wasn't interested in me because I was very poor at drawing She ignored me or was very rude about my drawings.

Identify the qualities of the teacher you liked (eg strict, kind, sense of humor patient) and the teacher you disliked (eg not interested in pupils, impatient, unfair). You now have some positive qualities and some negative ones.

The purpose of this is to give you a way of thinking carefully about your own teaching. Comparing what you think your ideal teacher would do with what you actually do may help you to identify areas where you would like to change Then you can work out what actions to take.
